Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did I receive your emails?
Because at some point you subscribed to a Fido/Y@C fax to email service.

  • I have only had this email (hotmail/yahoo/etc) address a few weeks, why are you emailing me?
Because someone who used to own that email address subscribed to our service somewhere between 2003 and 2005.

  • What if I do not want to pay?
J2 Global Inc will be a basic / limited free service going forwards, you should await more information from them.

  • Why can't you just port the number to your new platform?
Believe me, we have been trying to do this for the last 6 months, however the porting process is a slow and cumbersome one, and the deadline set by J2 means that it will be another 4 months (minimum) before we are in a position to migrate the numbers, by which stage you will have already been on J2's service and be required to upgrade to their commercial service if you wish to continue to receive faxes as TIF/PDF format

  • What does OfCom think of all of this?
We have been speaking to OfCom however the regulatory framework takes time, and as Y@C/J2 are not refusing to port the numbers, they are just being very very very very slow in agreeing porting terms we are forced to take this alternative action

  • But I've just had my stationary printed, it will be months before we order any more!
The numbers won't be turned off overnight, but we do need you to start to advertise your new number as soon as possible. The new service provided by J2 will mean you need additional software to view these EFX files and this software is sadly not available for all platforms.

  • But I paid to keep the number for life!
Whilst we feel badly about this, the deal was for the "life of the service" and unfortunately as a result of circumstances outside of our control the service as it stood when you paid for the number in 2003/2004 is no longer being offered. As such the caveat emptor in the conditions has now been activated.

  • But I thought I'd paid for you to migrate the number and keep it?
Whilst we took details of customers who wanted to keep their number we did not process any payments as we were still working to port the numbers, and were holding off until such time as the porting agreement was in place. As you will note we have still not been able to finalise a porting agreement and sadly it looks as though it will not be possible before very late next year, if at all.

  • Who do I complain to?
You can complain to OfCom, stating you were a Yac customer having bought your number through FidoNet. They may be able to help bring pressure on Yac and J2 to finalie the porting agreement early. Note there may still be an administration charge for porting number if we ever manage to complete a porting agreement
